Sufi Rock, A Simple Intro

Contrasting rhapsodies with Harmonium and Guitars romancing all through the song, the sufi rock way!
Its actually surprising and breath taking, how the string instruments take place of soulful cries in a traditional qawwali to take the genre into yet another level.
Genre has its roots to legend Ustad Nusrat fateh ali Khan himself. In 1995, pearl jam's Eddie Vedder joined hands with Nusrat saab to come up with Face of Love and Long road, two singles in this genre.
1) The Face of Love

.
2) The Long Road

Then, with micheal brooks, ustad ji came up master class albums, "Mustt Mustt" - A must hear album in the genre and Grammy nominated album "Night Song".
Sweet pain from Night Song & Star rise (Another one album released by micheal brooks posthumously to ustad ji's demise)

After ustad ji's sad demise, Rizawan & Muazzam (Distant cousins to Nusrat Ji, who were then tutored by Nusrat ji himself) become one of the torch bearers of this genre.
They came up with Naina De Akhay and Nima Jaana Jogi Naal in a Coke Studio Performance.

It is with Band Kailasa, by Kailash kher, the genre got popular in India.
Saiyaan By Kailaasa

Bismillah by Kailaasa

Arr has composed many qawwali's & Sufi Song's for Bollywood films and Albums but first song to have a trace of this genre is his collaboration with Niyaz in the Single, Mazaar

Latest song in the genre is the Master class Sufi Songs from the Movie, 'Highway' composed by  none other than the Mozart of Madras.
Yeah its patakha guddi. Both Male Version & female Version is different and Awesome in its own merit.
Let me share ThalaivArr's version of Patakha Guddi

Sorry for Covering a small gang of artists. Please contribute your views to further improve the scope of this article!

Tango for Taj Rockstar

Ever thought a Qawwali could be an Instrumental? Yeah it can be when the magician himself is ready with his weapon of choice (Piano)
I'm talking about Tango for Taj. That is one hell of a composition...!!!
Its been more than a year since the release of the album Rockstar. Still the Songs are the Mainstay of everyone's play list.
Tango for Taj which is part of the Two Instrumentals from the album Rock Star is  more like a Romantic Dance being played by two rhythm's within a Piano.
Close your eyes, listen to the tune, you could find a solitude rhythm searching for its Counterpart and the rejoice at their meet. Qawwali it is..!!!

List of sufi songs by A.R. Rahman with an Introduction to sufi songs

Sufism is not just about the songs, its a way of life. There is more to it. It is how the heart gets cultured and filters the dirt out off by bringing positiveness and Love into the heart. Love can be towards anything, It can be towards fellow human beings, Other creatures or the Ultimate Creater the God himself, according to melvana Rumi.

Sufi Music is often compared to a spinning wheel. The movement of the wheel at the outermost region would be more than the innermost portion but the entire friction and physics lies at the centre. Sufi Music revolve around many a topics but the major emphasis would be on one thing that is Divine Love. Repeating the same sacred texts during the course of the performances makes the desired impact that is to flush away the impurities from hearts of the audience experiencing the divine art form and flourish the positiveness unto that.

It can be a Hamd, Sung in praise of Allah, Naat which is in praise of Prophet Muhammad, Manqabaat - a Praise in the honour of any of the sufi saints ( as in the case of Khwaja mere Khwaja which was sung in the praise of revered saint Khwaja Moinudeen Chisti ) and Kafi or Ghazal revolving around generic subjects

Rahman is an ardent follower of sufism and many of his songs were inspired by sufism and its venerable saints. I have attempted to compile the sufi songs here. Jai Ho...!!!

Ar rahman's secularism

To me he is the most SeculArr person i know. Be it a song about Islam, Christianity or Hinduism he never misses to touch the hearts of the listeners. Every single time he sings something about God, he leaves us all spell bound by the divinity and peace. The grace with which he approaches the song makes us all fall in love with the song at the stroke of the second we hear it.

I don't have to say about kun faya kun, Khwaja mere khwaja, piya haji ali, Maula mere maula, Al madatha about Islam. Who would even forget the Anbendra Mazhayile from Minsara kanavu and Anbin vasale from Kadal ( New Arr - Mani ratnam combo )..??? Ek onkar about sikhism..??? Radha kaise na jale from lagaan, Pal pal hai bhaari from swades, Ayyapa sami from Boys ( Tamizh ) about Thamizh

First song sung by A.R. Rahman

Whenever people come to know that you are an Arr fan, they try to test you by posing the question " What's the first song of Arr...? "
I say, answer to the question is kind of tricky. To be frank his first ever would be Chinna Chinna Aaasai from Roja. Yeah. I expected that grin with surprise....There would be one loop around 3.15 in the song. Thats the part with arr's Humming...That small piece that shows how heaven would sound as i would say..
Here is an another version of the humming he performed at the unity of light concert quite some years ago,

Anyway the first full song sung by A.R. Rahman would be urvasi urvasi from kadhalan....!!!
This is particle of the new series Discover A.R. Rahman....
Stay tuned for more discovery....!!!
Jai Ho...!!!

Is Anbae anbae a qawwali ?

I've always wondered about the genre of the song " Anbae Anbae " from jeans, every time i hear. One question comes right to my mind as i hit the play button...Is this a qawwali..???
Again if we are to apply the traditional scales, we have to reject the question but if we take contemporary examples, we may conclude it as a filmi qawwali.
The song meets the major requirement, One emphasized context on which the song should evolve. The singer's appetence towards his girl is the main nucleus on which the song's built upon. Much like the qawwali "sanu ik pal chain na aawe" by Nusratji which is about the seperation of the protagonist from his beloved

Lyrics of the song:

" Anbe Anbe Kollathey Kannae Kannaik Killaathaey
Pennae Punnagaiyil Idhayathai Vedikaathaey
Aiyoa Unnasaivil Uyirai Kudikaathaey

(Anbe…)

Ar rahman and Vairamuthu #101

One of the Tamil Film Music Industry's long standing partnership is that of Arr and Vairamuthu. From Kadhal Rojave to Nenjukkule ( Kadal ), their partnership is been inspiring. I relive memories listening to their combo almost all the times.
From now on , in addition to the series of Ar Rahman qawwali's, i'm thinking of starting a new series - Ar rahman Vairamuthu partnership..

As the starting post, i thought to throw some light on vairamuthu's use of the word " Chiyaan " in A.R. Rahman's songs..

The most famous use being the " Chiyan kaata thondi partha semman ootru ratham than" from kodu potta song in Ravanan movie. In one media conference he had clarified his use of the word for the justification of the context and not for the lead role ( Vikram ) of the movie.

Interestingly, He had already used the same word with another context  almost thirteen years ago in one evergreen album of Arr. Thirupaachi aruvala song from the movie " Taj Mahal ", has the earliest use of the word " Chiyan" . Lines go like this,

" engooru pombalaiya moappamida vandhavana enga seeyan mookka aruththaaga "
