Ar rahman's secularism

To me he is the most SeculArr person i know. Be it a song about Islam, Christianity or Hinduism he never misses to touch the hearts of the listeners. Every single time he sings something about God, he leaves us all spell bound by the divinity and peace. The grace with which he approaches the song makes us all fall in love with the song at the stroke of the second we hear it.

I don't have to say about kun faya kun, Khwaja mere khwaja, piya haji ali, Maula mere maula, Al madatha about Islam. Who would even forget the Anbendra Mazhayile from Minsara kanavu and Anbin vasale from Kadal ( New Arr - Mani ratnam combo )..??? Ek onkar about sikhism..??? Radha kaise na jale from lagaan, Pal pal hai bhaari from swades, Ayyapa sami from Boys ( Tamizh ) about Thamizh

First song sung by A.R. Rahman

Whenever people come to know that you are an Arr fan, they try to test you by posing the question " What's the first song of Arr...? "
I say, answer to the question is kind of tricky. To be frank his first ever would be Chinna Chinna Aaasai from Roja. Yeah. I expected that grin with surprise....There would be one loop around 3.15 in the song. Thats the part with arr's Humming...That small piece that shows how heaven would sound as i would say..

Anyway the first full song sung by A.R. Rahman would be urvasi urvasi from kadhalan....!!!

Is Anbae anbae a qawwali ?

I've always wondered about the genre of the song " Anbae Anbae " from jeans, every time i hear. One question comes right to my mind as i hit the play button...Is this a qawwali..???

Again if we are to apply the traditional scales, we have to reject the question but if we take contemporary examples, we may conclude it as a filmi qawwali. 

The song meets the major requirement, One emphasized context on which the song should evolve. The singer's appetence towards his girl is the main nucleus on which the song's built upon. Much like the qawwali "sanu ik pal chain na aawe" by Nusratji which is about the seperation of the protagonist from his beloved

Ar rahman and Vairamuthu #101

One of the Tamil Film Music Industry's long standing partnership is that of Arr and Vairamuthu. From Kadhal Rojave to Nenjukkule ( Kadal ), their partnership is been inspiring. I relive memories listening to their combo almost all the times.
From now on , in addition to the series of Ar Rahman qawwali's, i'm thinking of starting a new series - Ar rahman Vairamuthu partnership..

As the starting post, i thought to throw some light on vairamuthu's use of the word " Chiyaan " in A.R. Rahman's songs..

The most famous use being the " Chiyan kaata thondi partha semman ootru ratham than" from kodu potta song in Ravanan movie. In one media conference he had clarified his use of the word for the justification of the context and not for the lead role ( Vikram ) of the movie.

Interestingly, He had already used the same word with another context  almost thirteen years ago in one evergreen album of Arr. Thirupaachi aruvala song from the movie " Taj Mahal ", has the earliest use of the word " Chiyan" . Lines go like this,

Who could forget these words..???
Uttering these in oscar stage with all glory before him made every one us proud to be a fan of him. And whenever a discussion arises about the word, people quote the hit song "ella pughazhum oruvan" as his first use of the exact word. But people get surprised to hear his first use of the word " ella pughazhum iraivanukke " is almost 24 years ago.  In a devotional album " deen isai mazhai" , which's also the earliest album record by A.R. Rahman, he composed a song on the word and his close friend late shahul hameed had sung the song.

Every one would've surely heard the song ' Khwaja mere khwaja' and fell in deep love with the song and the Saint khwjaji himself. Saint khwaja was a benevolent of poor and many artists like nusrat ji, Ar rahman, rizwan muazzam qawwali party, and many more have sung songs in honour of the saint khwajaji. The song Khwaja mere Khwaja, qawwali rendition is something special for every rahmaniacs. Hearing the song we could easily experience the love arr has for the saint

I'm planning to start a compilation of the sufi songs of arr here. There is a great fanfare for his sufi songs in particular as he doesn't misses to inspire and make us all divine when we listen to them. I'm trying to put together the sufi songs by him as a list which spreads across languages.
Originally the sufi and qawwali songs are songs which are sung in the praise of allah ( The god ). Later sufi transformed as a sole mystic renderings about the god and his power. Qawwali in a way got a diversed range of subjects on which it is sung. It is used to sing about the god, love, nature, e.t.c., according to an article about sufism.
There are experts in the field who consider and argue that the both are same genre "Sufi" and qawwali is a part of it. I also take it that way.

Getting a visa to come to the US, let alone coming over to share my love and music with Miami University.

I cannot believe that it is over ten years since my music and me have been associated with Miami University. I have enjoyed collaborating with your students and faculty and above all, every interaction has allowed for greater understanding, sensitivity and growth. I feel humbled by the fact that so many students here from another culture have made my music part of their lives. Learning from this experience has allowed me to gain considerable confidence in starting my own Western Classical Music Conservatory in India. Above all, there are several Miami students who have come over to assist me in making KM Music Conservatory grow in multiple ways and they have grown themselves learning from our culture back in South India.

There are many things that come to my mind and heart to share – everything matters but having engaged in a such a long term relationship with Miami University, I felt like sharing five interesting thoughts which came to me last night.

Learning through Travel - Keep an open mind and be ready to receive things that come along the journey - So often, we have an opinion from someone of a place or a culture before heading to a destination – each one of us are made differently - sometimes there are so many hidden truths of a place that are never revealed to us till we experience it ourselves

2) Never ever rush into Judgment - especially about people - there is always another side of a story, a good side - we must always find ways to see the beauty and value of a place or a person or an institution or an art form; half the problems for each of us can be solved if people do not rush into judgment

3) When there is a tough situation in your life, consider this idea - slow down your mind, detach yourself from the sadness and always be bold to walk the path - you will certainly find relief, solutions, breakthrough ideas, extraordinary rewards - but do not expect them soon - they will come to you at the right time because if the rewards come soon, you will not be able to handle it and could be a recipe for disaster

4) Be in touch with the poor - try to think of ways to make their lives better - think of how you can pull them up - there is a hidden virtue in doing this because time and time again, when society ignores the poor, they always perish eventually

5) To live in the umbrella of truth and honesty is so simple and easy if you think about it – having a strong ambition sometimes comes in the way of the truth. To achieve a natural balance takes a lifetime but it is so worth it. In India, we say Satyameva Jayate, which means the truth, will always triumph and in fact, that was the name of my first song collaboration with Mick Jagger from our Band Superheavy

I wish to thank a few people who have made a significant impact in my life: My father and mother have anchored me with good values; then Mr. Mani Ratnam who is India’s noted film maker gave me my first break in the world of cinema in the film Roja. My Sufi teachers opened my consciousness and helped me discover myself. People from all around India have embraced me and my music without any discrimination and today, I find the same spirit of acceptance in Hollywood.
Music does not belong to one country or one race of people. When I started listening to Bach, I did not know what religion he was, or which country he came from. What mattered most was the purity of his works. Over the 25 years I have learnt, not merely their instrumental or vocal styles but also absorb the philosophies that have empowered their musical language. But universities can only be the starting point for a long journey ahead. You have to collect new strength now and seek the knowledge in these ancient musical cultures to see how they can give you a new identity.
This graduation day is only the first door that is going to open and show you a never-ending stairway going up. Yes, you have all the talent but the most important equipment that you need to have in order to begin the long climb is a very simple device called a ‘Smile’. Just wear it and you will see how smiles get converted to miles"
