List of sufi songs by A.R. Rahman with an Introduction to sufi songs
Sufism is not just about the songs, its a way of life. There is more to it. It is how the heart gets cultured and filters the dirt out off by bringing positiveness and Love into the heart. Love can be towards anything, It can be towards fellow human beings, Other creatures or the Ultimate Creater the God himself, according to melvana Rumi.
Sufi Music is often compared to a spinning wheel. The movement of the wheel at the outermost region would be more than the innermost portion but the entire friction and physics lies at the centre. Sufi Music revolve around many a topics but the major emphasis would be on one thing that is Divine Love. Repeating the same sacred texts during the course of the performances makes the desired impact that is to flush away the impurities from hearts of the audience experiencing the divine art form and flourish the positiveness unto that.
It can be a Hamd, Sung in praise of Allah, Naat which is in praise of Prophet Muhammad, Manqabaat - a Praise in the honour of any of the sufi saints ( as in the case of Khwaja mere Khwaja which was sung in the praise of revered saint Khwaja Moinudeen Chisti ) and Kafi or Ghazal revolving around generic subjects
Rahman is an ardent follower of sufism and many of his songs were inspired by sufism and its venerable saints. I have attempted to compile the sufi songs here. Jai Ho...!!!
